Addressing country’s challenges- The literacy issue in India

Highlighting the important statistics

The Indian subcontinent has a literacy rate of about 74 percent according to the 2011 census. So the global average of literacy in India is below 84 percent, and that indeed is concerning. Several initiatives have been taken to combat this situation.

In Spite of the government running country-wide campaigns such as- Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, this country has the largest global population of illiterate adults. This totals to 287 million or 37 percent of the world population

Barriers in rural India

The most prominent hurdle to education in Indian rural areas is the lack of access to quality schools there. Economic limitations and weak educational infrastructure deprives millions of children of their right to formal education. This disparity continues the cycle of poverty. Naturally, these children are unable to explore their potential and contribute to the nation’s development.

Our mission to bring change

Sunflower Charitable Trust recognizes the importance of addressing this burning educational gap as soon as possible. The trust wants to lend a helping hand to children giving them access to quality formal education. They can then embark on their journey to build a successful future for themselves. We believe that these children, if given the opportunity, do hold the potential to become notable doctors, lawyers, businessmen in future.
